A new shooter, or one with limited hands on experience should buy the simplest firearm initially. This is usually a small revolver, usually chambered in .38 special and using good quality ammunition like Hornady TAP etc. There should be no safeties to worry about when using the firearm under stress, and there usually are few problems with failure to fire. It should simple to clean and easy to handle.
Many handguns are very big for women, but small handguns are available for self defense purposes. These are easy to load and easy to fire.
